An error log helps you study the mistakes most likely to return.
Record the cause
Write the question source, the concept involved, the wrong step, and the correct approach. Keep the entry short enough to review quickly.
Group similar errors
Patterns such as sign mistakes, unit conversion, formula selection, or incomplete diagrams reveal habits that a single score cannot show.
Reattempt without notes
Return to logged questions after a short interval. Remove an item only when you can solve it correctly and explain why the earlier approach failed.
Use five compact fields
Record the date and source, topic, error type, correction, and next review date. The correction should name the principle or decision that changes the answer. Copying the full solution makes the log slow to maintain and difficult to scan.
Distinguish the main error types
Concept errors come from an incomplete rule or model. Method errors involve choosing an unsuitable approach. Process errors include algebra, signs, units, substitutions, or missing steps. Reading errors miss a condition or command word. Checking errors happen when an unreasonable answer is accepted despite available evidence.
Write a correction rule
“Careless mistake” does not tell you what to do differently. A useful entry might say, “I distributed the negative sign to the first term only; on the next attempt, place brackets around the entire expression and check each term.” The rule connects the cause to an observable habit.
Add one representative example
If several questions fail for the same reason, keep the clearest example rather than filling the notebook with duplicates. Link the other question numbers to that entry. A compact log makes patterns easier to see and leaves more time for reattempting.
Review by pattern, not date alone
Once a week, group entries such as unit conversion, graph interpretation, formula selection, balancing equations, or sign control. Choose the pattern with the greatest effect and design a short practice set around it. This turns the log into a revision plan rather than an archive of old mistakes.
Use a two-stage reattempt
First return after a short delay and solve without notes. Then include a fresh question of the same type in a mixed set a week or two later. The first check confirms that the correction was understood; the second checks whether the method can be recognised without being announced.
Example entry
Topic: density and units. Cause: mass was left in grams while volume was converted to cubic metres. Correction rule: write the target unit beside every quantity before substitution, then convert all quantities into a compatible system. Review: two fresh unit-conversion questions on Friday.
Retire an entry carefully
Do not remove an item because the solution looks familiar. Retire it after a delayed correct attempt, a brief explanation of why the old method failed, and success on a new variation. If the error returns, reopen the entry and adjust the correction rule.
